Be a Superior Emotion Leader
Posted by Moss under: Business .
Someone has to deal with the people issues. Inspiration, vision, a dream, a strategic initiative are no doubt energizing. Execution, planning, focused action, and getting things accomplished can be quite satisfying. However, people screw things up.
People have feelings, different motivations, triggers, emotional meltdowns, upsets, frustrations, and a host of complaints that makes dealing with them exhausting and painful.
These people issues will never go away. It’s part of human nature to take things personally, overreact, and replay the human soap opera over and over again. It goes to the emotional managements leader to understand and regulate the emotional climate. This leader is the problem solver, the facilitator of dialogue and skillful discussion, the negotiator.
The emotional management leader moves problems into challenges, opportunities, or action pathways. Power struggles and arguments are channeled into collaborative strategies focused on creating mutual understanding, safety, or respect.
The emotional management leader possesses a talent for understanding motivational needs, listening, appreciating different perspectives, and helping people to reconnect to each other in order to problem solve and remember their larger purposes.
Bottom Line
- The emotional climate must be managed.
- Humans are an unruly bunch.
- Breakdowns and misunderstandings happen.
- Understanding, respect, safety, and reconnection don’t happen by themselves.
- It is the toughest part of leadership.
